Civil Partnerships
Now same-sex couples can have their relationships legally recognised as "civil partnerships".
In many aspects a Civil Partnership must by law be treated like a marriage. The areas of equality include:
- employment benefits
- most state and occupational pension benefits
- income-related benefits, tax credits and child support
- tax such as Inheritance Tax
- the duty to provide reasonable maintenance for a civil partner and any children of the family
- inheritance of assets (including tenancy agreements)
- the right to apply for parental responsibility for a child
- protection from domestic violence
- immigration and nationality rights
Can I register a civil partnership?
If you want to form a civil partnership you must first give notice of your plans to the register office.
When you have done so, notices similar to marriage notices are published by the registration authority for 15 days.
A civil partnership can be made at register offices and at other approved locations (in England and Wales).
